Week 1
Tuesday 16th April
Lesson 4 - 5: Idea Development
Deciding on what you want to do
The main brief above allows you to create a production of your choice. HOWEVER, it is advised that you choose something you have a passion about, make sure it is a production you know you can do well but also one that will push your skills to the next level. Do not create something that sits within your comfort zone - this is the unit / production that requires you to adapt, learn and develop.
We will spend today doing focus groups to start your idea generation.
1. You should have uploaded 3 ideas which you are prepared to produce
2. Those ideas must be sent out to your peers / family / friends and teachers and you must gain feedback BEFORE deciding on your final piece. Upload ALL feedback gathered and analyse your findings to justify the decision made.
3. Write your final idea out in DETAIL.
Important factors on deciding your idea:

3. Write your final idea out in DETAIL.
Important factors on deciding your idea:
- Can you get the actors you need
- Is the location accessible
- Can you complete in the set time frame
- If you are producing a documentary can you get hold of the experts needed for interview
- Will your work offend anyone - if so, don't produce it.
- This is the production that will ultimately be shown to universities, potential employers as well as the public and parents during the exhibition
- What sort of props do you need to make the production look professional
- Will you be able to re-shoot. You are required to show test shoots, 2nd and even 3rd drafts so the ability to re-shoot is a must
- Are you working for a client or competition?

Lesson 7: Production Schedule
Production Schedule suggestions
Although you are required to produce a schedule you should work off the following guidelines. You have a total of 11 weeks to complete your final project (3 weeks will be taken up with Easter Holidays and half term)
3 dates that are set in stone and can't be moved
ALL research 3rd May and planning should be completed no later than 10th May
7th June: Production deadline
Week of the 10th June: Pitch
14th June: Final deadline
NB: There will be no requests for an extension on any of the above deadlines so please plan for these in your schedule
Your scheme needs to be weekly but at the start of each week it needs to be daily. You should plan what you need to do before you do it.

Tip: Do this on a work document and upload - if anything changes CHANGE this! YOU ARE TO DESIGN THIS SCHEDULE - WE WILL MARK YOUR WORK BASED OFF YOUR OWN TIMELINE. Before you complete this make sure you look at what is required for each section on each tab and schedule accordingly.

Lesson 8: Bibliography
Writing your bibliography and action plan
You have been asked by UAL to put a proposed plan together for what you intend on researching. It should look as follows
Tip: This can be its own tab or on your concept page. In order to keep it updated putting it directly onto your weekly would help.
Week 1

Lessons 9 - 12: Competition/Client; Problem Solving & Brief
Who you are making it for
Here you need to find a company, client, artist or competition that you will be producing your production for. You will follow their guidelines and rules and the branding of your work will include their logos and relevant imagery.
Competition
If you are producing it for competition submissions you need to include the following
- Information about the competition
- Dates and deadlines
- Categories available and what you would enter
- Submission rules
- Entry fee
- Winning prizes
- Why you feel you could win this competition
Client
If you have found a client to work for you need the following
- Name of client
- Company name (if they have one)
- Client occupation
- How you found them
- An outline of what they want you to produce (written by them with proof of exchange)
- Deadline they are working to (you still need to meet the official UAL deadline)
- Any specific rules / requests they have asked for
Problem Solving
Planning for issues
To achieve the highest grades you are required to plan for problems you may face - this will help guide your research but also your planning and production stages

Example of good practice
Tip: This needs to be completed BEFORE you start - it forms part of your contingency plan.
Brief
Brief
All of the above needs to be put into a professional brief
The brief must be professional and in the style of your production and uploaded as a PDF document
- Title page
- Information on client / competition
- Outline of final idea (project concept in more detail)
- Rules and regulations
- Your target audience
- Legal and ethical issues
- Production schedule
The brief must be professional and in the style of your production and uploaded as a PDF document

TIP: Do this in word - add headers and boarders which match your production title and make it look professional. Add page numbers, headings and images to your work. SAVE AS A PDF and upload
Each week
Along with your weekly blog on how you over came issues you need to demonstrate problem solving by doing the following
Problem solving guidance
- Contingency plan for all aspects that you could face during filming (THIS IS IN YOUR PLANNING FOR ISSUES)
- Mock / test shoots Before you shoot your final production you need to show you have tested everything that can go wrong.
- (THIS COMES IN THE RESEARCH STAGES)
- Auditions Make sure you set up professional auditions for your cast (THIS COMES IN THE PLANNING STAGES)
- Legal and ethical issues you may face producing this production – focus on plagiarism and copyright as well as filming in unauthorised locations, scenes of nudity, upsetting scenes, covering difficult subjects / topics, advertising unauthorised material / products, content of the narrative could be sensitive etc.
Ask your peers what ethical issues you may face and discuss how you will over come these
(THIS IS IN YOUR PLANNING FOR ISSUES)
- You are required to obtain consent forms to film in locations as well email confirmation of actors and their involvement (THIS COMES IN THE PLANNING STAGES)
Upload emailed content forms or create your own for actors to fill out (this would be more professional)
High Grade Tip!
Remember to explain the decisions you make! Writing just a couple of sentences is not going to be enough for you to comprehensively demonstrate your understanding and communicate complex concepts clearly. Your brief needs to show you know exactly why you have chosen to produce this production.
Forms to download and use
This download provides you with a template to write your brief on. You must personalise this yourself with the relevant branding and images.
