What to research
Genre – Research the conventions of your chosen genre along with a minimum of FIVE clip examples from that genre.
What are the conventions of this genre? Use secondary research to establish what the generic conventions of your chosen genre are. What do the audience expect to see / hear? Secondary research
There are books in the library - you must have AT LEAST ONE book to help your research! Primary Research - Focus group You must have 1 Focus group with at least 4 people Asking them the conventions of your particular genre Your practical TEST SHOOTS will evolve from what you find out in this section so make sure you ALWAYS refer back to your own product and how you can use that skill in your production!! |
What will you take from this research and how will you use it in yours?
Again, write up your idea with your developments highlighted in a different colour. Showing a link between your research and your product is vital. To obtain a distinction your research MUST match up to your production.

Topic - You must understand the topic of your production. If you are creating a documentary for example you must have researched a balanced view of the topic as well as the interviewees. This is the same for your short film - if you are creating a short film based on domestic abuse you need to understand the impact it will have on your characters and how they will have to act. Music video will need topic research with regards to the plot but also the artist lead performance.
Topic research should show you understand the subject as a whole but more specifically it should help you to make decisions on what you will include to make your production more accurate. People's experience (secondary and primary) are vital to develop your understanding.

Research on your contents should develop your production more than any other area - discuss HOW your production has developed. What will you add to make your production more professional?
Target Audience
Using primary and secondary research. determine who your production should be targeted towards. What are their viewing habits? What are their hobbies? Where do they spend their money?
Send out a survey to establish what it is your target audience want to see or hear. Combine these results with secondary research into their hobbies, spending habits etc... to build an audience profile.
All primary research results should be uploaded and analysed directly on your site. What have you learnt from them and how can you use this information? What has developed or changed as a result of these findings?

Practical tasks - how will you shoot the production? Upload new skills you will learn. This can be in the form of YouTube how to guides on how to create an effect, colour correct, create a horror mise-en-scene, make up for a certain genre, sound / music for a certain genre. This is where you can create your own research - you can film your self carrying out the above skills. For example test shoot the lighting for your horror, create different sounds for your production, test camera set up for interviews, check your camera settings to suit your production etc. This is where you will lift your grade - undertaking your own research shows initiative and creativity. TEST SHOOTS MUST DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS. YOUTUBE TIPS BELOW TO HELP |
What you should have for each test shoot
1. A plan of what you want to do and why
2. Link to the inspiration from your research (YouTube clips of where you have seen it / a written idea of why you want it)
3. 'How to guides' from YouTube / Internet on how to do it correctly
4. YOUR TEST SHOOTS (MULTIPLE TRIES) (get pictures of behind the scenes of you doing the test shoots for your weekly blogs / evaluation)
5. A write up of how you think it went
You need AT LEAST THREE (more is desirable) test shoots (with all 5 elements from above)
Do NOT do a test shoot that doesn't PUSH your skills beyond what you already know
Do NOT test shoot camera angles (unless it is for interview set up)

Extension work
For students who want to push their understanding and skills base then the below can be completed. This work MUST not be INSTEAD of any other work and ONLY COMPLETED if you have time to do so.
Artists / professionals within the chosen medium who you admire and whose work you would like to draw on for your own project
Look at at least TWO artists within your chosen medium
What have they produced
How have they told a story?
What are their trade mark skills - Why have you chosen these? how will you adapt them?
This can be done via secondary AND primary
Why do you appreciate their work - give examples of work you admire and what aspects do you plan on using?

Platforms your work can be viewed on - internet / TV etc. and the advantages of such platforms – this could be researched through a survey.
After researching your target audience where could you air your production and why (don't just write YouTube).
Film a focus group for this and upload it to your site
Evaluate your answers
